In his book, Sorry You Missed The Sixties, photographer Philip Townsend says these photos of the Beatles visiting the Maharishi were taken at the London Meditation Centre, and it was the first time all the Beatles met the Maharishi. It’s almost certainly after the Bangor weekend, so it’s not the first time they all met, however it is possibly the first time all the Beatles and wives/partners met the Maharishi as Maureen didn’t go to Bangor with them. He also dates it as 1966, which can’t be correct either. Some sources date this as 31st August 1967 and some as 4th September 1967.

I had a very frustrating conversation with Philip Townsend at Beatlefest in LA years ago when I asked him for details about this photo shoot for which the press has long published conflicting information. He also told me it was 1966 and didn’t know the exact date or place - in London. He said he didn’t shoot any color film (a crime!). He couldn’t confirm if Cynthia Lennon was there or not and couldn’t identify any of the other people in the photos. Apparently he now remembers even less in his book, Sorry You Missed The Sixties...

Details At Last!

A recently published 2017 book, The Beatles, Drugs, Mysticism & India, by Paul Mason provides the following details which finally after all these years seem credible: Photos by Philip Townsend (none of his photos are in the book) were taken on Thursday, August 31, 1967 in the elegant Kensington, London home at Albert Place of Maharishi’s devotee Jemima Pitman. The woman sitting on the other side of Ringo in some of the photos is Hermione Cassell. Select press members were invited. Maharishi spoke about the use of the mantra.

I highly recommend the above mentioned book! It has lots of previously unpublished photos taken in India and lots of detailed information. It covers the Beatles spiritual journey from before and after India. Though there are lots of great photos - the printing quality is often not the best unfortunately.
